Why should I get Counselling?

Focused psychological strategies can help with many different concerns such as depression or mood disorders, anxiety disorders, relationship problems, adjustment issues, family conflict, personality disorders, life crisis or trauma.

Focused psychological strategies can help with positive events such as choosing a direction in life or reaching your full potential.

Perhaps you are experiencing significant events in your life such as getting married and starting a family, leaving home for the first time or coming to terms with the death of a loved one. Having a professionally qualified practitioner to guide you through your concerns who is not personally ‘involved’ in the situation can be immensely useful.

Getting the Medicare Rebate

Make an appointment with your Medical Practitioner and tell the Receptionist you need an appointment to get a referral for counselling (they need to book a longer session). Your Medical Practitioner can either email the referral to rm.emonson@bigpond.com OR fax referral to 02 6013 9646.

You may choose to take the referral when you see your Medical Practitioner and bring to your first session. If more than one person is attending for counselling, each will need their own referral.

How many sessions?

If you have a referral, this will depend on what your Medical Practitioner suggests. Generally, plan for about six sessions once a fortnight. If a particular appointment time suits your other commitments, it is best to book several sessions ahead at that time. After the sixth session, we discuss whether further sessions would be helpful and at that time, I write to your Medical Practitioner giving him/her an update on your progress and ask their opinion about further sessions.

Each person is different, there are no rules about the number of sessions although we aim for less, rather than long term sessions. Each session is 50 minutes in duration. In the near future, appointments can be made online.
